There are some things you definitely do not want to do while you’re employed, especially if you are someone on the low end of the totem pole. If you are unemployed but applying for jobs, you should listen up too. Here are 7 Major DON’Ts when it comes to working.
1. Don’t complain about your job
If you hate your job, keep it to yourself and start applying elsewhere. There’s no benefit to complaining about your job, especially on social media because you never know who is going to see it.
2. Don’t make fun of people you work with
Making fun of someone is wrong, regardless of if you work with them or not. Making fun of someone online, can lead to even bigger problems. If your company has an HR department they might consider it to be cyber bullying and if that’s the case, you can kiss your job or opportunity goodbye.
3. Don’t make inappropriate social media posts
You shouldn’t post on social media while you’re working, nor get caught up in your newsfeed, especially when it comes to NSFW content. Chances are, you probably work with people who are also your friends on social media and while you may not be directly connected to your boss, you never know what might end up on their newsfeed. A general rule of thumb, at work, do work. At home, you can post and share all the NSFW content you’d like.
4. Don’t Post inappropriate pictures
Posting pictures that are inappropriate might not only look bad for you, but also your company. When you sign the papers and work for a company, you are now a direct representation of the message they’re trying to portray. For instance, if you work with young teens and substance abuse, it’s probably not a good idea to post pictures of you drinking or doing a keg stand at a party. Think before you post.
5. Don’t break the rules
there’s a rule that says you are not allowed to eat at your desk, don’t eat at your desk. Go to the designated break room or somewhere where it is okay to eat. The same applies for all other office rules. Abide by them and you shall face no repercussions. There’s no sense in testing the waters to find out what may or may not happen.
6. Don’t reveal company secrets
When you signed up to work for a company, you also signed up to keep the business of the company within the company. Companies build themselves off secret ways of working, programs or ways of accomplishing tasks. For example, if the secret formula for Coca-Cola got out into the public, Coca-Cola would lose its touch and could go out of business as millions of others would just replicate their products.
7. Don’t blow your cover
There has probably been a time in all of our lives where we were supposed to work but called in sick when we weren’t actually sick. If this is the case (don’t feel bad because we all do it), sometimes life happens and things get in the way. Just don’t do something that will get you caught and blow your own cover. For example, do not go to a huge pool party and then post a picture of it on your social media account when you were supposed to be at work.
